We’d be screwed without mouse models and NHP models. I haven’t heard of pharmaceutical tests on dogs though.

In the 60’s they tested cigarettes on beagles. I somehow doubt the use stopped after that.

Sometimes the pathogenesis of a particular disease is much closer to that of humans in one animal than others. Maybe Beagles drew a short straw with a particular disease rendering them more accurate than non-human primates or rodents.

I heard that in '92, Fauci muttered a slur at a 7-eleven clerk after he refused to sell him a case of Coors.
Further reports indicate that, when notified of his overdue Blockbuster rental, Fauci was overheard suggesting the establishment's staff pleasure themselves.
For the better part of 30 years, colleagues have all tried to speak out about his refusal to chip in for the office coffee club, despite his taking up to 3 cups a day from the pot.
According to locals familiar with the incident, he ran over his neighbor's kid's bike on purpose in 2002 because he was tired of finding it in his driveway.
There have been Facebook rumors that he uses margarine on his corn, but an inquiry is said to begin next week.
He also eats babies and wipes his ass with woodland creatures he steals from rescue centers.

I work with somebody who used to carry out experiments on monkeys. He’s a very nice guy.
Nature of the experiment.
Animals have been used for many years. Beagles were one of the prime animals in verifying the link between cigarettes and lung cancer. But in any experiment, you treat the animals as humanely as possible.

Right - it was the Hill article that sent me to the White Coat Waste Project. That’s the source of this.

If you were unsure, a quick google could inform you that NIH has 20k employees and makes ~50,000 grants a year.
I sit on a grant review committee. Reading 20 is hard work (admittedly I'm a non-scientist, but still).

Even then, chances are that the grant was approved/appropriated while Trump was in the White House, making Trump the side “who approved beagle pups be locked in cages so their faces can be eaten alive by giant sandflies, with the dogs having had their vocal chords severed so they cannot cry out in pain...”
