Pick of the Litter

Why do some girls stand head and shoulders above others, when it comes to picking a mate?
I was thinking about this last night, as my wife was showing me a Facebook video. It was taken at a Fair Queen competition, and one of the girls competing is a member of the local cowboy church. The girl didn't win. She's still got some acne issues at 17 and she's not particularly polished, although she looked nice in her evening gown. She still has the shyness that some girls have and she only competed because her friends urged her into it.
But what Gracie is now, is not what she'll eventually be. She's tall for a girl, almost six feet in her cowboy boots. She's not model thin, but more like the lean look you get with somebody that's on a horse a good bit. But she'll fill out a little more as she gets older, and the basic structure is well proportioned. She's a natural blond and has the pale complexion to go with it.
What makes her what she is, is kinda akin to an old saying my mother had. Pretty ways make pretty people.
I don't know what happened to Gracie's parents. They aren't in the picture. She lives with an older sister, but she probably spends more time at one of my friend's homes, farting around with his horses and running barrels or maybe just helping him with his cows. She works hard, so he doesn't mind her piddling with the horses whenever she wants. She does love her horses.
She sings a little. Self-taught herself guitar and she's not bad. Kids tend to gather around her at church and you often see her packing one of the toddlers or watching somebody else's children for them, while the parents are doing some task.
I have no clue what she wants to do in life. I don't know if she does, either. What I do know, is that girls like Gracie are not common. Hard-working, church-going, good with children, creative, humble and I think will be quite attractive in a couple of years...If I was a young lad of 19-20-ish, I'd try to put a lasso on that cowgirl.
Girls like Gracie are the pick of the litter, so to speak.

19? Bloody hell, I didn't know my arse from my elbow back then. I wasn't thinking long-term, that's for sure, and my social skills probably rivalled Aqua's.

I suspect when you were that age, much of what you are, was already there. You can't improve what you have none of.

Yeah, based on your career history, I would guess this as well.
