Why do we want the size of the (younger) population to grow or at least remain stable? Just take in more immigrants until robotics and artificial intelligence catch up, and your Social Security and Medicare will be fine.

I'm curious where the decrease is coming from.
Affluent families tend to still be 2-parent. The single-parent rate is coming from working class families.
Do people from those 2-parent families still have kids at a similar rate as the generation before? Who is having fewer kids and why?
It's really tough to answer if this is disturbing. If you're part of a family and generally happy (like me), feels a bit disturbing. But, if you're a childless, happy dude you may see nothing wrong with this at all.

More financial freedom appears to be correlated with fewer children. That would check out for those of us who understand that children, historically, were free and necessary labor as well as an existential risk to the mother.

I think worldwide, education and more economy = less kids
It seems somewhat opposite that richer people would have less kids than poor people, but that is the way it goes, not only in the US.
