    The docents respond:

I think the response gives too much credence to the goals of the new director. She should be fired immediately and those who normally contribute to this great facility should discontinue that financial support immediately.

You can't create harmony by attacking the in group. You only start a war.

Imagine for a moment if you will what would happen if a white woman noticed that all her volunteers were black, and fired them due to a lack of diversity in the workforce.

Why are so many people in positions of power, so freaking stupid?

Forget the Art institute. Redeploy the resources towards reducing crime, reducing homelessness, improving basic services, etc. And by "resources," I also include the volunteers. Art museum is luxury. Chicago (and many big cities) needs the basics more.

It seems like a short-sighted strategy as those folks and others like them are a source of planned giving. Obviously, it is also a bad PR move. "Engagement" has become one of the new buzzwords for organizations - but many organizations screw up the concept.

Art defines the better aspects of society. Museums, art galleries and concert halls should be encouraged, and many deserve public support and should be free to all.

Carnegie knew that free libraries could nurture the public's mind. Free art can nurture the public's soul.

I'd say it's far more important than that. There's a direct connection between how advanced a society is, and its advancement in the arts.

When we went to the moon, Slaughterhouse Five was published; Easy Rider, Midnight Cowboy, True Grit, the Wild Bunch, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service were in theatres; and Space Oddity, the Who’s Tommy, and In the Court of the Crimson King hit the record stores.

Look at what we had in the past couple years. Who were the poet laureates? Which new books were most celebrated? Which movies were most seen? Which songs were played the most on Spotify?

We need art history now more than ever. We need to remember what we're capable of.

It doesn't make sense. Ax is a pretty accomplished pianist. There has to be some there, there. How can you make music without soul, beauty, pain and passion?

Very true. His music is lovely. Yet what he often advocates is, in my view, a very soulless world. Could be just playing devil's advocate.
