It's been 30 years since I've read Veblen (a Chicago guy, George).

I should reread him soon.
When you shake someone's deep sense of self-worth, leaving a scar in their ego, they will persistently try to diminish you through petty arguments & obsessive captious criticism of your actions, just to soothe the wound.

The "luxury beliefs" idea is a brilliant way to think about high status leftist culture.

Speaking of Chicago, I bet those fired museum volunteers were chock full of these sorts of beliefs. Probably still are.
Education is extremely important.
