@jolly said in What the HELL is going on in Oz?:

Mr. Biden, take notice and learn.

We haven't seen anything like this in the US, afaik.

Apparently this is only in Melbourne, I've not seen similar stuff elsewhere.

These might be similar, but it looks like a smaller scale

This sort of thing could help Mr. Biden's poll numbers

There are at least 3 groups:

      1. Tradies who were told get a jab by week's end or be out of work.
      2. Folks who hate this shit and are dressing as tradies in solidarity to protest.
      3. Extremists who are using this as an opportunity. (Think Oz Antifa.)

The proportion of these 3 groups varies according to your news service of choice. Pro-government agencies for example are saying group 2 is really just group 3 in larger numbers--group 1 hardly exists. Anti-government are all focused on groups 1 and 2, and group 3 doesn't exist.

The truth is in the middle somewhere.

      Please love yourself.

Why the extreme fear down there? To the point of isolating a country, such as New Zealand.

It's a virus. It's coming. You will not keep it out. And if Israel is any indication, you may can keep people from dying with a vaccination, but you can't keep them out of the hospital.

Part of it is something you can only understand if you check your mental model of the world at the door for a second.

This is the same country that sprayed down the seats of every passenger on the plane I took to get there to kill any invasive spores or bugs. Every day, every plane, every seat. They're more sensitive to foreign organisms and it's not completely without reason. As an island nation, their ecosystem has been hit hard by things that were brought in and don't belong.

That's part of the story. Also, they're more socialist (in the scando sense) than us and this part is just a guess, but there might be some hubris at play: we're small, we're an island, we can keep this out completely if we just hit it hard.

          Please love yourself.

All this happened close to a week ago.

Like all mobs, the rabble needs to be controlled and if necessary arrested.

Mob lives don't matter when they are breaking the law.

Sure, but the government shares some of the blame. They're doing nothing to try to prevent unrest, establish mental health services to those who lost their jobs, are isolated, etc. If they're not going to change their policies, they're responsible for taking some reasonable measures to help their citizenry weather what they've enacted.
