@Klaus mentioned something in another thread that got me wondering… Is the current pandemic the biggest global crisis since WWII? And does that make it the 2nd biggest crisis in modern history, say over the last 1,000 years or so?

200,000,000 died during the Black Death, with less people on the planet. That was pretty bad.

It's a walk in the park compared to many other things in the past.

If Covid had happened 500 years ago, all people would have noticed is a small dent in the death curve, and would have moved on.

Okay, how about if I phrased it as “How we are handling Covid 19”

With the lens of previous pandemics?

Not bad. We've come up with a novel vaccine and a novel immunoglobulin therapy in not a lot more than a year. Plus, we've taken existing therapies and we are starting to tailor them for COVID. That ain't bad, but I think we can do better.

Problem is, COVID is mutating and that presents all kinds of challenges. Take this observation, for what it's worth...With the first COVID wave, guys would get put on the vent and if they died, it might be two, three weeks. With Beta, if they die, they usually go within the week. Often within 72 hours. It's a little different ballgame with every variant.

It's supposed to have now killed more in the US than the 1918 pandemic. From another perspective, it has killed more US citizens than all of our nation's wars since its inception - so kind of a big thing.
