You guys might remember about 6 weeks ago I passed a stone… About 3 weeks ago I started to have light symptoms of an infection. The doctor said it’s not really unusual and had me submit a urine sample. As this was very mild symptoms we decided to hold off until we got the test results back to see if an antibiotic was necessary. Went back two days later and they said it was pretty severe. Of course, I was symptom free by this point… So they ran another test. Clean as a whistle… Go figure…

Two days ago I started getting symptoms again. Yesterday, though, I was fine. Today? It’s like a Mack truck hit me. 101 fever and I feel like crap. Fortunately, the prescription was filled, I just never needed to take them. Just took my first antibiotic and going to the doctor tomorrow.

Sounds like you never really passed the stone. If it's a uric acid stone, it won't show up on x-ray or CT.

Stay ahead of it. If it causes a ureteral obstruction, it can be a BFD. Stay hydrated.

Your doc may prescribe Flomax to increase urine flow to help the stone move down.

So they ran another test. Clean as a whistle.

      What did they do?

Urine again, checking for E Coli and other bacteria. Apparently the test on the Friday before had a high E Coli level. On Monday? It was perfectly clear.

@lufins-dad typical bacteria for a UTI.

            "Typical" ≠ "Good" of course.

Keep ahead of it as much as possible. If you get a fever, etc., give your doc a call. This can get serious, so stay on top.

              Maybe, maybe not.

Typical protocol is to do a dipstick urinalysis. alt text

If it pings positive for leukocyte esterase, blood, protein (30mg+), nitrite, a microscopic is done. On the micro, if they see bacteria or WBC's, it's cultured. Interestingly enough, lab guys look at spun urine sediment, GU docs tend to look at unspun urine. Go figure.

If the stick is negative and the urine is yellow and clear, it's reported out and the micro is not done. Therefore, no culture on a negative stick.

Lab errors and mix-ups do occur...
