Dude you thought that because I take the virus seriously that I'm a liberal SJW. Call me cynical, but I have a sneaking suspicion your mind has been made up on this particular internet meme analysis. The thing could be right but I give our chances of open-minded discussion about zero.

I’ll bite.
A more reasonable comparison would be New York City vs Miami Dade county
I imagine the rural parts of NY state and Florida are on equal footing
The density of New York City is 28000 per sq mile
The density in miami dade is 1100 per sq mile. 4% of New York
Density is the propogator of infectious disease.
So it makes sense that New York has a shitload more cases than Florida
Don’t think taxes or budgets or even governors have anything to do with it.

It’s reasonable to compare states and then look for reasons why there may be a difference.
In this case, I thinks it’s obvious. Density coupled with massive international travel and voila-perfect Petri dish for viral transmission.
To look at this and think it’s partisan, Republican vs Democrat , although tremendously fashionable these days, is to want to force argumentation into an otherwise neutral situation.

The density issue is a big part of it but there is a tremendous amount of international travel in and out of Florida. It may not be quite at NYC levels, but on average across the entire state? Probably not that far off. And the susceptibility of Florida's older population can balance out some of the density issue. And don't forget that we had the big fear of how Spring Break was going to devastate not just Florida, but the rest of the US as well. It didn't. In fact, I believe some studies have pointed to New York as being the seeding event for most outbreaks across the US including Florida.
Still, it wasn't because of anything that DeSantis did or didn't do. It was because Cuomo was extremely late to the game. Oh, he got very vocal and came across very strong on TV, but that wasn't until after it was essentially over. He screwed up early and it cost NY.
The other biggest difference? Vitamin D. Sorry, but it is popping up more and more in test after test. Who do you think is getting more Vitamin D? Floridians walking on their beaches or New Yawkers in their gray towers?

I don’t disagree that Florida (and the Gov in particular) was senselessly and mercilessly bashed and may in fact get the last laugh. The attackers though will not be checked and their old diatribes will not reappear in the media, as they will be protected.

It's the same with Liberty University. They were called out again and again for partially reopening, though they remained in compliance with state regulations. The NY Times gleefully reported that dozens of kids were sick (turned out to be false) and there memes and attacks everywhere. Everybody ignored the fact that Virginia Tech, UCLA, ASU, and others did the same. They also completely ignored the fact that after finishing the year last week, not a single student tested positive. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/liberty-university-wrongly-declared-a-virus-disaster-now-the-model-to-follow-falwell

Both states are required to balance their budgets, and both states are in debt. Both are trying to figure out how to close the hole this year and are looking to the Federal Government to help.

Now make the same graphic for Trump and Xi.
I’ll wait.

Never been to NYC. I have been to Miami. English is a foreign language in Miami.
Besides population density, I would also consider climate.

If you want to talk about Trump and Xi, go start a thread.

I made the point I wanted to make, no deep dive necessary.
