That's not all that was said about Mulan. The major point made about Mulan, was that it was highly successful because the female lead character went through a classic developmental journey, as most male characters do. Unlike the character Rey in the Star Wars movies, who somehow was born with every skillset imaginable.
His point is that the generations of writers who wrote Mulan and the last Star Wars trilogy were raised with a different societal view.
Always remember, Operation Valkyrie was an act of sedition.

As pop culture goes, I wouldn't say Mulan (from the Disney franchise) is "successful," certainly a lot less success than other "Disney princesses."
His point is that the generations of writers who wrote Mulan and the last Star Wars trilogy were raised with a different societal view.
Is the author not aware that Mulan is based on a classical character drawn from Chinese theatrical traditions going back over one and a half millennia, while the Star Wars stuff is practically a modern invention with maybe only half a century of history?

In any case, the earliest known written record of Mulan's story (about Mulan disguising herself as a man to serve in the military in her father's place) goes back to ~400 A.D. I thought George Lucas invented "Star Wars" in the 1970's. Is that not the case?
