Cam Newton released from Patriots due to Vax status
-
@mik Yeah, it's been pointed out in more than one place how you can't keep a veteran on the bench in favor of a rookie.
Julian Edelman said it was a cold decision, but that if you knew Belichick it's not surprising. We know all about that, don't we? But what was Belichick supposed to do? If Jones was the better bet, on what basis could BB be justified in putting Newton in the field when he couldn't read the playbook as well as Jones?

Here's a prediction analysis for Thursday's game, Bucs-Cowboys: https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2021/9/6/22658885/cowboys-at-buccaneers-week-1-primer-dak-prescott-tom-brady-mike-mccarthy-bruce-arians-zack-martin
(Although, from another site: "Most people only love reading predictions so that they can throw them back in your face down the road after you end up being wrong about something . . . ")
Excerpts:
"For Dallas, it’s very simple: the season will go as Dak [Prescott] goes. His ankle looks great, and so does his shoulder despite a mostly-manufactured worry mill during the preseason. On Thursday night in Tampa Bay, Prescott will see his first game action since his gruesome injury against the Giants last year."
So he's going up against Brady with a recovering throwing shoulder. After being out forever. Hmm. I'm thinking he's got to be like the ant in the song about the ant and the rubber tree; he's gotta have miles and miles of hope.
After a lot more interesting content, "In other words, it’s a good thing that Dak’s ankle looks to be doing so well, because he may very well have to do a lot of running on Thursday. Between those potential problems on the offensive line and the thought of Tom Brady facing such a young and inexperienced defense, it’s easy to see why the Buccaneers are favored to win. But the Cowboys have the ingredients to win too, setting up a potentially thrilling start to the season."
Lots more good stuff at the site, with me mostly reading along dumbly and nodding like a bobblehead.

Not getting your point. From the article
Fewer than two weeks ago, however, Newton was the starter — according to coach Bill Belichick. Jones took charge after Newton missed five days due to a COVID “misunderstanding.” Maybe Jones would have supplanted Newton sooner or later. Newton’s absence surely helped it happen sooner.

Cognitive issues? We should probably report that to VAERS.
Go back and read the link I posted and read Belichek’s words. He was pissed this thing was turned into a vaccination issue and pointedly talked about the disruptions caused by the vaccinated individuals that have tested positive. If Cam was lighting it up do you honestly believe he would have been let go?
10-15% of the Patriots are unvaccinated and still made the team.

Well, in your defense it would be hard to read that guy's stuff as anything but bobblehead material. He's babbling to create content. First he praises Prescott, then says he has no chance, then says he might win. Utter nonsense.

Ok ability to be at preseasonpractices and assurance could play in games was not a precipitating factor. You can’t make this up.

There is at least one other player on the team that missed time for protocols and is still there…Why can’t you take Belichek at his word?

Just win, baby.
That covers it.
The vax stuff is press hoo-doo.

I am taking the sum total of what I have heard in football over the decades and applied that to Cam’s case. It’s the most plausible but of course it could be different this time, there is a first for everything. So maybe.

To clarify my thoughts on Cam I am only arguing over the timing. His vax status likely accelerated what was inevitable but a great game 1 by Cam would have complicated that.
Why accelerated you ask? A mere release without any other variable would invite a raft of media I don’t think Belichick would have imposed on himself.

In fact it's entirely within reason to think Cam was released based on his ability to win, as compared to his replacement. Historically, winning is the thing, I think we can all agree on that, and I think we can all even agree that that's what Belichik cares about. It's all he cares about. A vaccine-free Cam would be on the team.

If Cam would have had a great game in the beginning of preseason, he'd be the starting QB for the Patriots this weekend, regardless of vaccination status.

I suppose Cam was benched in October and December last year because he wasn’t vaccinated?
-
Let’s start looking at the articles written about Cam by sports writers just before he was let go for hints.
Here’s a couple for starters.
-
From the first article:
“He has been highly touted in this space for his heroic 2020 season. He deserves top accolades for what he did last season. It was a Promethean effort worthy of praise, not disparagement”
BWAHAHAHAHA!
He was atrocious last year. As I said, he was benched twice in games. He had a QBR of 39. He threw more interceptions than touchdowns and this fansite is saying he was heroic…
Players benched twice in game don’t come back the next year.
