Female doctors have lower in-hospital deaths than male doctors
A new study in Canada found that patients cared for by female physicians had lower in-hospital death rates than those who had male doctors.
"Our study overall shows that female doctors have lower patient death rates compared to the patients of their male colleagues, but the difference could not be explained based on imaging tests, CT scans, ultrasound, things like that," said the study's lead author, Anjali Sergeant.
"However, the lower death rate in the patients of female physicians was partially explained by the fact that a higher proportion of new medical grads are female and that these new grads may be more up to date," added Sergeant, a medical student at McMaster University in Ontario.
The study was prompted by past research in a primary care setting that suggested there could be differences in how male and female physicians practice. This included reports that female doctors spent more time with patients, provided more patient-centered care and care with an empathic focus.
A U.S. study, done in 2017, also found a similar difference in patient death depending on physician gender.
Oh...
But the team found the difference was statistically insignificant when they accounted for the number of years the doctors were in practice.
"What this told us was that patients with female doctors may have better outcomes partially because more women make up more newer medical grads in Canada," Sergeant said, noting some evidence suggests that new medical grads, male and female, may be more up to date on clinical guidelines.
I don't doubt that more-current, more recently-trained docs might have a lower mortality. But since more of these more recently-trained docs are teh wimmenz....

So common. There’s also an abjectly bullshit headline floating around about black patients having better outcomes with black doctors.

New doctors beget better patient outcomes than old doctors. How do the old doctors feel about this?
Did you know a Level 3 trauma center has more patients die within its walls than an urgent care?
Statistic wise, that means you're better off being treated in an urgent care...

The medical care where I live sucks (insert your vulgarism of choice here). One time I used one of those machines in drugstores that measure your vitals. My blood pressure was scarily high. I didn't know what to do. I found an urgent care center and went in and told my story to the young woman at the front desk. She asked, "Do you have an appointment?" I'd have thought the answer to that was obvious, but I answered no. She goes, "I'm sorry, but we can't see you without an appointment." I go, "But this is an urgent care place, right? Like, urgent?" Her: "I'm sorry, but we can't see you without an appointment." I say, "So if I drop dead out here in the parking lot, it will be because I didn't have an appointment?" "I'm sorry, but we can't --" I go, "Yeah, yeah," and left.
And didn't die, no thanks to her.
So I'd take the term 'urgent care' with a wee dram of salt if I were you.

When The Bee bit me a few months ago, I got a nasty infection. I showed up to the closest urgent care and got the same runaround.
Was it that long ago that urgent care places were where you went when something was "urgent" but not worthy of a trip to the ER?

Still is. At least at most of them down here.
In the closest city, we have something fairly new, a pretty much free-standing emergency room. It's like an urgent care on steroids. They see patients that are urgent care, but they also see patients a notch up. The place has a limited menu lab and an x-ray department with a catscan. They will routinely start UV's and hang fluids. They even have a few boarding rooms, where they can keep a patient overnight. Place has at least one physician on grounds, 24/7.
