After Mik's suggestion about picking up tarts at the local church, I'm thinking about reporting my wife.

My friend's family left Afghanistan because of that. IIRC one of the daughters mentioned something about reporting to her school/teacher during dinner, and that night they left the country with literally just the clothes on their backs.

Police arrived at my in-law's place awhile back. They just barged right in and searched the place, found my in-law's guns (he's a vietnam vet—not troubled or anything, just owns guns is all) and took him downtown.
A kid at my brother-in-law's school (he was 14 at the time) told the school he overheard my brother-in-law say he was going to blow up the school.
Problem was, kid never met my brother-in-law. Because after they raided my in-law's place, they asked the kid more detailed questions, and he described my brother-in-law as "middle eastern." My father-in-law is Armenian. His son is adopted. He's whiter than me, tonally and culturally. Kid just said that shit because he wanted to pick on a middle eastern kid and well, what can I say, public school geography failed him.
They moved. My brother-in-law goes to a different school now.
To the best of my knowledge, my father-in-law never got his guns back.

Tell me about it. Only reason my FIL isn't more pissed is because they didn't confiscate his really good ones, which were in storage.
It's not like they're refusing to return them. It's just that the process would be more or less insane.

People and authorities get caught up in these drama waves.
Remember when Janet Reno was finding a child molester behind every tree? My wife's first cousin was the pastor of a small church and took in a troubled girl, while her family tried to deal with some internal issues. Within a couple of weeks, she calls the cops and states she's being molested in the pastor's home.
Couple that with a gungho, young assistant -DA, and it took hiring a lawyer to get this thing killed at the grand jury level. It was real obvious, real quick, that the girl had some real problems with the truth. But once your name hits the news it takes years to get your good reputation back.
