I decided to get my ebike out of storage. It had been there for oh, about 16 months. Amazingly, the damn battery was still completely full. How?! And I had taken it in a couple centuries, so it needs a tune-up, but I figured I'd just see how it was working otherwise.

ebikes are strange. Mine doesn't have a throttle, it's not a moped with pedals. It uses pedal assist, and it's heavy as hell. That means getting up to and maintaining 20 mph is a cinch, but it'll stay right at 20 when the motor clicks off unless you've got a serious downhill.

So I got it up to 20 around the neighborhood when this shit happened.

    FF7F1F25-B0E1-4D18-9AA8-A10A0887C4D3.jpeg

I was standing up, too, so I collapsed. This happened to me a few years back on the national mall, and I ate serious shit. My leg was FUBAR for well over a month. (I posted gnarly photos at the old new coffee room at the time.) I learned my lesson, and instead of trying to avoid the top bar I smashed my nuts to keep the thing stable. It worked, but, well, I smashed my nuts. And a toe as I was wearing sandals because I'm Mr. Safety.

Can't believe I broke a chain. Am I really that fat?**

So I got Aniki, my single speed out.

He needed his tires pumped up. That's it. No rust, cables are fine, wheels are still nearly perfectly true, quiet as a mouse. I absolutely love singlespeeds. Aniki is the shit.

New high-tension chain doesn't come in the mail for about 10 days. Maybe then my toe won't be killing me as much.

**Regarding the fat issue, that's no shit. I'm not allowed to ride a lot of higher-end bikes because they were only designed to hold a max weight of 180 lbs. I'm a hair over 200. Nevermind that I'm 6'4", I'm what the lycra-clad motherfuckers call a "Clydesdale," which is their special term for fat male cyclist. Ask me again why I hate MAMILs.

    Please love yourself.

Wow! What a strange failure. I had a chain snap on me on a 50 mile ride one day. It was a super light (weight weenie) chain. I think it saved a few grams over a regular chain. I replaced it with a regular chain.

Glad you're OK. Sorry about your nuts. OUCH!

Thanks, I'm just glad it wasn't more serious. The bike shop I got it from is pretty solid: free tune-ups basically forever, and a serious discount on heavier work. Their mechanic is a good guy and he's always done me a solid, so I'm sure they can figure it out. But likely this falls under some kind of warranty. Sure, I've taken the thing on a couple of centuries but there's no way I put more than 1k on that chain.

        Please love yourself.

180 lbs weight limit? I've never seen that. The lowest weight limit I've seen is 110kg (240 lbs). Got an example of a high-end bike with such a low weight limit?

What’s the difference in torque and energy on an ebike cogset vs regular bike?

Not anymore as I give no fuck about road bikes anymore. One was a Felt, I remember that.

When I worked at a bike shop, I remember there was a brand we carried that came out with an interesting bike: a track bike with 650s and some slightly interesting geometry changes. It was my thought that maybe it would make for a good city bike, making slow turns a lot easier. (Hell, probably trackstands, too.)

We reached out to the company to get a demo bike to see if we wanted to get more for our inventory. I remember my manager making the call right beside me. They said sure, and asked what size. He told them my bike size.

"(Laughing) I don't think we have one that size, can I send you some other size?"
"It says on the website you make them that large, so can you just send one that size?"
"We don't have that one available. Why do you want one so large?"
"Because the guy who wants to try this out rides that size."
"Can't you just get someone else who rides a smaller bike?"
(To my manager's credit, he didn't budge. I still don't know why he said this, it's not like he owed me anything.) "No, this is his idea, so if you want to sell these bikes at our location, you're going to have to sell us a demo in that size."
"Well, we're not going to have that one available."
                    "(Laughs) Like, ever?"
                    CLICK.

Do you get that? We were trying to buy a demo bike, with the idea that maybe we'd carry (read: buy) more, and they couldn't be bothered getting one together with a larger frame.

One thing I've learned over the past seven years is that the road cycling community, at least here, is pretty prejudiced over large and tall people. I don't give a fuck how that sounds, I've quit jobs over it, and so have overs I've worked with. It's one of many reasons why I sneer at that particular industry.

                    Please love yourself.

I'm about the same size as you, and I know of no bike model that I couldn't get in my size (current general supply shortages in the bike industry notwithstanding).

It's completely fine that you don't give a fuck about road bikes, but I'm not sure whether your reasons for that are (still) sound.

Klaus knows how to use the internet! Very good, Klaus! What was the wheelset I was using, can you Google that for me? A lot of 'em have a weight limit of 80-90 kg or so. Would you like me to find examples of that or would you like to Google that, too? I've already started, so let me know if you'd like some links.

I love my road bike (capacity ~250 lbs), and to be honest I love my Lycra despite the vast amounts of shit my family give me, and I really love my PROPER CYCLING SHOES. I don't think I've owned a pair of sandles since I was 12.

I probably need to replace my chain.

Fair enough. πŸ˜„ I suppose I should clarify that a person who rides a road bike and does the lycra thing doesn't bother me at all. Riding bikes is good. I just really dislike the road cycling community, which is not the same thing.

Glad you're ok, Aqua. That could have been well nasty.

I love my road bike (capacity ~250 lbs), and to be honest I love my Lycra despite the vast amounts of shit my family give me, and I love my PROPER CYCLING SHOES. I don't think I've owned a pair of sandles since I was 12.

Fair enough. πŸ˜„ I suppose I should clarify that a person who rides a road bike and does the lycra thing doesn't bother me at all. Riding bikes is good. I just really dislike the road cycling community, which is not the same thing.

I don't really like people, so I definitely don't belong to the road cycling community. I have been tempted to go out on an 'intermediate' bike ride organized by the local bike store, but I'm a little concerned that people might show up with triathlon handlebars and try and break me on the hills or something. Not that that would be particularly difficult.

                                    I was only joking

Not anymore as I give no fuck about road bikes anymore. One was a Felt, I remember that.

Lowest rider weight limit of any Felt bike is 275 lbs.

My experience with LBS rides is that they vary quite a lot, so might as well give it a try? Might work out!
