God bless free thinkers, most of whom lean right these days.

You think? IDW tend to lean left.

One thing can be said with certainty - almost none of them are Trumpists. And zero of them are woke.

No none of them are Trumpists, whatever exactly that means. Certainly if asked, they would deny being Trumpists, along with any other free thinker. And when I say lean right, I mean within the context of pop cultural wokeism, which you may or may not agree is pervasive currently.

Sure, if you define anti-woke as "leans right", then they all fit that definition. But if you defined anti-trumpist as "leans left" then they'd fit that definition too.

I'm thinking of, off the top of my head, Sam Harris, Weinstein bros (and Heather Heying), Steven Pinker, Andrew Sullivan, Anne Applebaum, David Frum, Jonathan Haidt, Niall Ferguson, Claire Lehman (and most of Quilette crew), Geoffrey Miller, Michael Shermer, John McWhorter, Nicolas Kristakis, Douglas Murray, Bari Weiss, Thomas Chatterton Williams, Coleman Hughes etc.

All anti-woke, mostly (not all) left leaning, most anti-Trump.

Yes of course they are all classic liberals and grew up in a culture where most of the bright ideas came from the left. There’s a huge amount of baggage, personal and social, for such people to switch identifications. Meanwhile, I tend to agree with Harris or Weinstein on cultural issues. And I have no baggage associated with identifying as right leaning.

    Education is extremely important.

Being pro-Trump isn't facile at all, of course.

The only person I can think of who I consider both Trumpist and a free thinker is Peter Thiel, but he's not much of a public intellectual. Only in the sense that he keeps his opinions pretty close most of the time (GOP convention speech notwithstanding)

Be that as it may, that's not the main point. They actually see craziness and disfunction on both sides and are loathe to associate with either side, even in private.

The ones that truly switch sides are pretty much uninteresting tools, like Dave Rubin or Jennifer Rubin.

There's a difference between enthusiastically voting for somebody and sitting in abject despair for 1/2 an hour after ticking a box. The latter is not pro-Trump, so much as anti-something else.

            I was only joking

What has Peter theil said that makes him a Trumpist?

VDH is a public intellectual and wrote The Case for Trump. Trumpist?

I won’t ask you to attempt to define Trumpist. I’m just trying to triangulate it.

Gave a prime time speech for Trump at the GOP convention in 2016. Perhaps the only non-politician to do so who was not a grifter or a nut.

Being above a binary political leaning is a fine personal preference but again it’s facile to say both sides suck. And a failure of thinking entirely to say both sides suck equally.

I would have to read more of him. That's not a cop out, its just that I mostly read him in the pre-Trump days when his beat was history.

But to your point, maybe McCarthy fits that bill.

Ok so that means he cared about the election results, preferred Trump, and did what he could to convince others. Trumpist remains dismissive and ill defined.

“Cry havoc and let slip the DOGE of war!”
