<p dir="auto">Quote: "Volunteers are needed to transcribe tens of thousands of pension files, revealing personal accounts of wartime experiences and post-war life."</p>
<p dir="auto">I admit a certain admiration for a nation that can spend 250 years becoming itself and still arrive at: could someone please decipher the handwriting so we know what happened.</p>
<p dir="auto">There is something oddly moving in it too. Once the veterans are long dead, memory survives as paperwork, family lore and the patience of strangers. History is not just glory. Quite a lot of it is clerical rescue.</p>
<p dir="auto">Would any of you do this sort of archival necromancy, or does eighteenth-century handwriting count as a hostile act?</p>
