Down 6 steps to kitchen, living and dining rooms. Lower (ground level) had a "rec" room with exit to the backyard.

I say "grew up" tongue-in-cheek, tbh.

The first house I bought was a 2 bedroom Cape Cod.

I grew up in a very modest rambler. Really not sure how our family of 7 lived in it... I think maybe 1,100 SF when I look it up now, somehow with 5 bedrooms. We had a car port (no garage), and didn't have central AC until I was a teenager.

It's funny... as a kid, your house, your yard/street, it's your whole world. You don't know what you're missing in the least bit. You learn to know ever piece of bark on your front yard tree, each place where ant hills will appear, it's magical as a kid to live a life that was comfortable oh so small in retrospect. You know, I don't recall the house being hot without central A/C... but I do remember the summer nights with the hum of the ceiling fans putting me to sleep.

I agree with Mik - lots look cool to live in.

There are a ton of colonial revival in Washington DC. I thought they were mostly pretty houses.
